The benefits of exercise during cancer treatment

Did you know: Research has found keeping active during cancer treatment can help manage some of the common side effects felt by patients. It can help manage pain, fatigue and nausea, boost recovery time and in general improve your quality of life.

The Clinical Oncology Society of Australia (COSA) recommends exercise be prescribed to cancer patients as a standard part of their care and treatment program. This is also supported by Exercise & Sport Science Australia (ESSA) who promote the benefits of exercise during cancer treatment, tailored to suit the type and stage of cancer plus the side effects being experienced.

Some of the benefits of exercise for people being treated for cancer can include improved:

  • Muscle strength and fitness
  • Physical function to help with everyday activities
  • Immune function
  • Chemotherapy completion rates
  • Mood and self-esteem.

Staying active during cancer treatment can also help reduce hospitalisation duration and supports your psychological and emotional health.

Our Exercise Physiologists at Ocean Gardens can help you or your loved ones with your cancer recovery by providing tailored exercises and assistance to help you keep active throughout your treatment.
